This renovation project in Deolali by COCOA invites sunlight into the home, creating a living canvas where light and shadow take centre stage.
In the tranquil town of Deolali, Maharashtra, a 2,000 sq.ft. bungalow has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a new home where sunlight is at the heart of the design. Aptly named the Dance of Light, this project by COCOA, an architecture firm led by Rishabh Suvarna, reimagines a four-bedroom family home, weaving natural light into its essence while blending contemporary flair with timeless principles.
A Vision for Renewal
The clients, a family with grown children, wanted to breathe new life into their home with a modern makeover. The brief also included specific requests to realign interior spaces according to Vastu principles and reorient the entrance. A unique challenge arose with the exterior: the demolition of an adjacent bungalow exposed a previously shared wall, revealing an uneven surface marred by visible service pipes. This wall, once a limitation, became an opportunity for COCOA to showcase their conscious design philosophy—balancing aesthetics, practicality, and cost-effectiveness to create a refined yet functional living space.
A Striking Facade
The newly exposed facade evolved into the project’s standout feature. The design addressed the wall’s undulations and unsightly utilities by encasing the pipes within a sculpted mass, then cladding it with brick veneer. The result is a textured, visually arresting exterior that transforms it into a bold, new statement. Granite chajjas, a reimagined main gate and compound wall further enhance the home’s appeal, setting the tone for the luminous experience within.
Interiors Where Light Dances
Step inside, and the Dance of Light reveals its true magic. Spanning two floors, the ground level houses a living room, dining area, kitchen, mandir, and a bedroom, while the upper floor features three additional bedrooms and a terrace balcony. Sunlight streams through the windows, their marble frames glowing softly on three sides – top and sides – while granite sills adapt to varying heights, blending with the skirting below. Inspired by traditional Japanese shōji screens, the window grills and railings cast shifting patterns of shadow across the marble floors, infusing the spaces with a quiet, dynamic energy.
The marble flooring contrasts with warm wood veneer on doors and furniture. The soothing colour palette, punctuated by contrasting veneer tones, creates a calm backdrop that amplifies the play of light and shadow.
Another standout feature is the mandir, a sacred space elevated by design ingenuity. Long, vertical marble slabs are staggered to allow slivers of light to filter through, bathing the area in a gentle, ethereal glow. An elephant head detail, both symbolic and structural, supports the horizontal stone slab, merging cultural resonance with architectural purpose.
Sustainability in Harmony
True to COCOA’s ethos, sustainability is seamlessly integrated with rooftop solar panels and maximized window openings to flood the home with daylight. Outdoors, the decision to forgo a traditional lawn conserves water, reflecting a thoughtful approach to environmental responsibility.
A Timeless Reimagination
The Dance of Light is a celebration of space, light, and lived experience. COCOA has designed a home that fulfils the client’s vision for modernity and tradition, where every element, from the reimagined facade to the light-drenched interiors, serves both beauty and utility. The result is a residence that feels both timeless and forward-looking—a place where sunlight dances through the day, bringing warmth, vitality, and a sense of serenity to every corner.
