The client brief was to transform an existing fifth floor roof terrace in Clerkenwell into a spectacular entertaining space. Wooden decking with integral seating and lounging areas is arranged to form separate sections for cooking and lounging, as well as two bars (designed to be strong enough to accommodate enthusiastic dancing). Other new elements include an extra-large Jacuzzi together with an open-air shower.
Whitewashed oak posts are combined with Ipe hardwood decking and stainless steel planters to create a beach-side ambience. The shower 'curtain' is made from the tiny stainless steel balls used in sink chains. This is then threaded into recessed aluminium channels as well as forming an overhead canopy to provide a shimmering privacy veil for the tub. In all, four miles of chains were used.
The terrace is arranged over two levels, with the lower level fitted with pale Portuguese limestone, a material also used to face the kitchen unit. Planting includes ginger lilies, cordyline, bamboo, and melianthus, providing lush tropical vegetation and additional privacy. An automatic irrigation system reduces maintenance. Services and technical equipment are neatly concealed by the new elements. The result is an insular, self-contained oasis in the heart of the city.
