Competition for Public Library in Daegu, south Korea Philosophy Human beings have their own
innovative and creative potentials that can be raised when one feels a
sense of ownership towards a place in which he can move in a free and
spontaneous way.The reasons leading to this interaction are not
clearly defined, however it’s obviously taking place. Today, the world
of knowledge has become open, fast and interactive. Accordingly, we have
to think about a design “without frontiers” that enable the user to
move freely through the different spaces of the library.. Image and identity The
main concept is to create an external buffer surrounding the project
that isolate the library from the streets on the one hand and strongly
interact with the community on the other through the public park and the
Eastern street which was selected to place the main entrance for
functional, visual and environmental factors. Ecological sustainabilityEnvironmental
factors have strongly affected the design concept such as the building
orientation towards North and East, the external Passage that isolate
the sound coming from the street, external courtyard and the
Environmental control space as well as green and waterscape. Morphology
The lines of the whole project are based on functional, visual and
environmental constraints. Those lines have been assembled within a
continuous free composition that should remain in the visitors’ and
passersby minds. Architectural features Interaction with the surrounding context• Interactive Passage-
It’s an outdoor edutainment spine that is parallel to the Eastern
street extension and connected to the street which introduce the visitor
to the library. The spine is open from both sides and can be used
as a sidewalk for passersby and, thus, the street can have an extended
sidewalk- Culturally, It affect the passersby through the outdoor screen that shows some information about the community. -
The spine can be used as an outdoor sitting area in which people can
use their laptops and tablets, read newspaper or just have a quick rest.
- The spine is strongly connected to the Public park piazza, which
may be subject for future developments or keep the Northern entrance as
it is.- The beginning of the spine introduces the people from the Eastern street to the main entrance. - The Spine is oriented towards the desirable Northern and Eastern wind to be directed towards the inside of the library - The spine might be considered the main gateway for the project and a landmark for the library within the whole neighborhood. - The spine is a sound insulation area from the surrounding street noise • Building as a Gateway The corner of Northern and Eastern facades create a Gateway for the project• Community gardensIt’s
a courtyard (Outdoor terrace) connected with the social activities in
the ground floor. Environmentally, it’s oriented towards the North to
filter the air and redirect it to the atrium space to be redistributed
to all the open spaces within the library.• Reading gardensIt is
located on the roof of the meeting room facing the main reading hall
and at the roof of the administration building facing the children area• ServicesEmployees’ entrance and parking area we looked at the southern Interaction with Internal Context• Environmental control The
East oriented atrium space is connected to the outdoor spine and the
open court to direct the desirable wind to the open reading areas as
well as afford the needed day light which is controlled through the
metal ribs and glass on the roof. • Community spacesAll culture
and lifelong spaces are located at the ground floor and connected
through a main wall on which interactive activities are displayed such
as smart screens and panels that are controlled by the users. This
connectivity increase the interaction with the community since all the
social activities are located in that floor while the library halls are
located in the upper floors. • Knowledge The entire Open user
Space (General collection room & reading room) is located in the
upper floor, to increase the daylight, it’s directly oriented towards
the North and to the East through the atrium. Additionally, being in the
upper floor guarantees, for the Open user Space, a level of acoustic
isolation. The space is flexible and is easily adaptable for the future
needs. Whenever we get to the upper floors, we get smart technologies & digital data spaces. • Children area Children
area is located at the second floor equipped with multimedia and all
needed logistics. We seek that those equipments and the free form
connected with an external garden help in increasing the imagination and
their eagerness to learn.• ServicesMost of the services are located at the western side and the basements.
