daCrib
is the catalyst for a new form of society, individualist socialism. It’s
predicated on a solution to counter the loss of mobility that humans encounter
as they age. This solution is to merge
the typical single bedroom nursing home unit derived from one’s basic spatial
needs – bed, closet, toilet, and seated bathtub - with a vehicle and a
wheelchair. The convergence of these entities creates a hyper individualist
space that gives the inhabitant ultimate freedom. daCrib has the ability to contract when
moving between destinations and expands into its full size when parked. This
may occur within a landscape to form new types of public space or while
attaching to other programmatic elements - such as the kitchen, living, and
fitness spaces – which are housed in existing and new building typologies.
It
is foreseen that as a result of this new ability the current vehicular status
in society will become less dominant. There will naturally be a transition
phase from daCribs solely existing within the elderly community, to younger
generations gaining interest and obtaining them for themselves, and finally the
point where there are no more vehicles but only daCribs. This also reverses the
typical trend where the new “gadgets” are predominantly marketed for the
younger generation and the elderly struggle to understand them, thus
reinforcing the age barrier. Instead,
the technology is focused on the elderly, making them the central point to
technological and societal innovation.
