D+ is a multifunctional arts and community center, repurposed from a gymnasium at Daystar Academy. It translates this K–12 school’s social innovation ethos into a cultural landscape where performing arts become the social glue of community life. The architecture responds by shifting performance from scheduled events to daily rhythms, and from private experience to collective memory.
Sunlight Theater with a Bi-Directional Stage
The existing windowless building was detached from its surroundings; a conventional closed-box theater would have remained dormant between events. At the heart of D+ is the 400-seat “Sunlight Theater,” featuring a 16-meter-wide motorized glass wall as the stage backdrop. When opened, the indoor hall and outdoor amphitheater merge into a bi-directional stage where nature becomes scenography. Daylight filters through windows of varied scales and is diffused by articulated ceiling and wall geometries, concrete textures, and warm oak finishes, shaping an acoustically rich, luminous chamber.
Everyday Gathering Through “Behavioral Topography”
The experience flows outward into a “behavioral topography.” Broad 1.6-meter-deep steps invite sitting, reclining, rehearsal, and play, transforming an event-only venue into a daily community terrace. Cloud-like tensile membranes hover among ginkgo, ash, and silk trees to moderate microclimate; at night, spotlights scatter like fireflies, lending the space a quiet poetic presence.
Spatial Symbiosis and Low-Carbon Renewal
Retractable seating and bi-directional stage equipment enable rapid transitions between performances, exhibitions, and banquets. The cafeteria serves as both a theater pre-function space and backstage support. Rejecting theatrical monumentality, this low-carbon retrofit prioritizes resilience through passive daylighting and ventilation, retention of the existing structure, and minimal material intervention.

D+ establishes an open stage for Drama, Dance, Dining, and Design, an evolving social ecosystem. Since completion, it has become the most active performance and gathering hub for the Daystar community.
