The ‘Cyberhive’ is an innovative design conscious Incubator space located at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s Research & Technology Park. The space occupies just over 3,300SF and is a thoughtful solution to the somewhat unconventional aspects of an incubator work environment.
With the focus on creating a unique co‐working environment for start‐up cyber companies seeking opportunities with government, cyber security, military, and commercial sectors, we developed a design to reflect our client’s technologically forward point of view within their mission and the innovative nature of their clients who occupy the individual incubator spaces.
Our design for the existing building shell space included seven office “incubator” spaces, a conference room, break area, collaborative gathering and flex space, and private phone booths. To foster a sense of community and interconnectedness between separate businesses that occupy the space, we incorporated glass walls to separate each office from the main open area. Glass is treated with semi‐transparent, textured film to allow privacy to each occupant, but still enables natural light from perimeter office windows to penetrate to the core of the shared space. The design departs from traditional treatment of materials in certain areas, while adding highly finished details in others to create a visually stimulating and distinctive space.
Ceilings are left exposed, existing rusted metal columns were left unfinished, and a farm table made from reclaimed wood unifies the open area. Additionally, red, blue, and black are used in finishes to incorporate the University’s color palettes, and an eclectic, materially diverse feature wall in the center of the space serves as another focal point.
