This project started out as an addition/remodel to a really nice little cape…”we’d like to remove the roof and build a second story addition”. This kind of project usually leads to extensive remodeling of the first floor, at which point you’re very close to the cost of just building a new house. One I heard “we’d also like taller ceilings on the first floor”, that’s when the decision was made to tear down the house & build a new house in it’s place.
The house is a straight forward colonial with a covered porch extending across the entire front, which will be finished with ipe decking, fiberglass columns & a PVC bead board ceiling. The rear of the house faces due south & has extensive windows & doors to take advantage of the light & views. On the first floor, a 2 story foyer is flanked by a formal living room & dining room, with an office in the right front corner. The foyer leads to a generous 30’x 30′ kitchen/breakfast area adjacent to a family room & sun room, all opening onto a bluestone & brick terrace. A screened porch in the left rear corner is accessed from the kitchen (as well as from the terrace & side yard), which includes an outdoor fireplace.
The second floor consists of a master bedroom suite across the rear of the house, with 3 kid’s bedrooms across the front of the house……each with a private bath & walk-in closets. The second floor balcony is open to the third floor, which has front & rear facing dormers along with a cupola acting as a light well from above. A 25’x 30′ play room is above the garage, 1/2 way between the first & second floors….with a 14′ high coffered ceiling, stone fireplace & (3) dramatic double hung windows with arched top windows.
Exterior materials include cedar clapboard siding, synthetic slate roofing, PVC louvered shutters, heavy PVC trim with dentil moulding at the eaves.
