Located in the historic core of Puyuan Fashion Ancient Town, Cui Leng Performance Venue serves as a contemporary cultural anchor within a setting deeply rooted in Pujin silk heritage and the top modern Chinese knitting fashion industry. The design creates a dialogue between seclusion and engagement, linking the adjacent temple complex with a new vibrant stage via a central axis spanning the waterway, forming a spatial journey from reflection to expression.
The open-air venue, spanning 2,700 square meters and accommodating 2,240 spectators, breaks from conventional layouts through a central cruciform lift-stage. This allows versatile configurations and fosters immersive interaction between performers and audience, adapting to diverse events such as fashion shows, culture performance, and public events.
Enclosing the site is a parametric facade inspired by Pujin silk—renowned as "the finest silk under heaven." By parametrically positioning 5,290 precisely angled aluminum panels with integrated custom lighting design, it captures the drape and luminosity of silk, merging the aesthetic tradition of local craft with high-tech digital fabrication. Its inner face is lined with PTFE membrane, creating a fluid surface which enables 270-degree projection across the venue for an immersive experience.
Toward the temple, the facade rises to reveal rotating aluminum-honeycomb louvers—a permeable threshold maintaining visual continuity while echoing Buddhist prayer wheels, poetically mediating between contemplation and spectacle. An ancillary pavilion, designed in a contemporary Chinese architectural language with interwoven courtyards, provides full operational support and serves as an active performance backdrop with multiple staged entry points for enhanced narrative engagement.
Ultimately, the project synthesizes cultural heritage and contemporary production, activating Puyuan’s layered identity through an architecture that respectfully stitches together history, community, and modern cultural vitality.
