Moving further from the city, two empty-nesters sought more privacy and a home they could remodel and make their own. The house previously served as a home for local musicians and exhibited quirky features like flowing mosaic inlay tiles and colorful stained glass windows stitched throughout. These “character pieces” became the inspiration for the new interiors. The redesign created an improved entry sequence by eliminating the multiple entry points and establishing a true front door. Inside, the foyer was maximized by opening the stairwell revealing a series of floating treads. The handrail was custom fabricated by local artisans. New slender steel columns and recessed beams replace two load-bearing walls, enlarging the kitchen and living room. The two spaces share a thin glass partition allowing floods of light from the stairwell into the new fitted kitchen.
