Cubic-Scape is a landscape installation designed for Shanghai Xintiandi Design Festival. We are tring to create a double identified shelter based on simply structure and geometric shape, via using some commen elements from xintiandi street. We named the installation "Qiu-Ting" in chinese. Qiu means hill, it looks like a large scale hillshape landscape from street view. However, when people walk colse, it tures to a pocket park & Public "Ting" (Means pavillion), where people can rest and play.
The construction of installation is prefabircated and modulised. it has four basic modules, there are large, middle, small, and basic grid, which represent four different space & behavious. (2-4people sit / kids & Pets / Plants Pond / Walk path). All modules can be easily arranged based on scale and size of the site, and been installed during one night. Different way of arrangement correspond different site and surrounding environment.
The installation shows different landscape and light texture. In the day time, milky white polycarbonate board with weak light behind have a light and floating visual effect, it helps to reduse the pressure of huge installation to the street. During the night, the bright yellow light penetrate the polycarbonate board, and make the whole installation looks as few Kongming lantern. it shines the roads and bring warm feels to passangers.
We intend to design an new landscape solution, which is repeatable and modulised, to cope with city's hard paving environemt, and to light up those dark corner of community or street.
The coverall cost of this 25msqr pavillion has been limited under 100,000RMB (appox. $13,000USD). It stayed in Shanghai Xintiandi for around 4 weeks, and then been delivered to Yichun city of Jiangxi Province. It will be relocated as a public pavillion in a new citypark, which will be completed in 2024.
