In the north of Lyon, the campus of La Doua is becoming denser, prompting the transformation of the university restaurant near the new tram line. The agency oversaw the rehabilitation of the existing building and designed its new extension. With the ambition of creating an attractive new space for all campus students, the Crous de Lyon becomes much more than a dining facility—it is also a place to meet, socialize, or enjoy a coffee in a setting that is bright, comfortable, and calming.
At the edge of the campus, the restaurant sits on a plot designed as a park, with tall trees and dense vegetation. Facing the campus entrance and alongside the tram line, the building serves as a landmark in the neighborhood, and its new extension represents the renewed image of Crous de Lyon. With its largely glazed volume, simple horizontal form, and sharply articulated façades, this new architecture engages in dialogue with the existing building. The massing, crown, and proportions provide continuity, while the façade highlights the original structure through a contemporary reinterpretation. Notably, the restructuring achieves a positive carbon footprint.
Through the Crous’s glass walls, visitors can observe the vibrancy of student life. The upper floor houses a 770-seat dining hall, featuring diverse colorful atmospheres and seating options. In contrast to the concrete, wood predominates in the interior design—from the furniture to the vertical and ceiling structures. On the ground floor, the café with its summer terrace shaded by large cedars evokes a bistro spirit. Well-being, particularly acoustic comfort, was central to the design, ensuring an optimal environment both for students dining and for the staff of the central kitchen.
