These timber, glass, steel and concrete canopy structures consist of laminated glazing on steel grids, supported by Glulam beams and columns.
The Glulam is made of beetle-killed pine from the interior of British Columbia. The Mountain Pine Beetle has devastated vast areas of British Columbia’s forests, affecting nearly 40 million acres thus far. If harvested and used quickly, the structural properties of the timber are not affected. Use of lumber from these forests is thus vital, as once the trees die they have a limited lifespan.
The beams and columns in this project are of elliptical cross-section, and the columns, for durabilitiy, transition to precast concrete in their lower sections.
