Set within the mountainous landscape of East Crete, overlooking the Aegean Sea, this small residential complex comprises two independent dwellings carefully embedded within a constructed topography of stone and vegetation. The project is conceived as a quiet dialogue between architecture and terrain, where built form and landscape are inseparable components of a single spatial condition.
The two houses are organised on a shared stone podium that acts as both foundation and landscape infrastructure. This elevated plane is extensively planted, softening the boundary between construction and nature while establishing a continuous green surface that mediates between the residences and the surrounding terrain. Within this podium, two swimming pools are integrated - each aligned with one of the houses—reinforcing the sense of autonomy while maintaining a unified spatial composition.
Each residence, approximately 90 sqm, is organised as a compact yet generous living environment. The ground level accommodates an open-plan living space combining kitchen and sitting area, anchored by a fireplace that introduces warmth and focal orientation. A mezzanine level introduces a secondary working zone, extending the spatial experience vertically, while two independent bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms ensure privacy and clarity of use.
A defining element of the project is the extensive pergola system that envelops each house. Conceived not as an accessory but as an architectural extension, the pergola frames outdoor living spaces, enhancing comfort and intimacy while structuring the transition between interior and exterior. It also functions as a living infrastructure, supporting climbing vegetation that gradually integrates the built form into the landscape.
In response to the Mediterranean way of life - where boundaries between inside and outside are deliberately fluid - the design prioritises shaded outdoor inhabitation as a primary spatial condition. The result is a composition where architecture, landscape, and climate operate in continuity, producing a restrained yet deeply atmospheric domestic environment embedded within the Cretan terrain.
