The area chosen for the construction of the library was a historic building in the town of Alcala de Henares (Madrid) El Cuartel del Príncipe (1859) the main facade forms one side of the Plaza de San Diego, where is also located the Hontañón facade of the historic Gil Colegio de San Ildefonso (XVI), current Rector of the University of Alcalá.

The project development have combined various goals, maintaining such as the pre-existing building through the introduction of a functional complex program volume within a given volumen.
