A courtyard typology stitches together two contrasting urban uses...residential and industrial.
The landscape of the residential rear-yards are dominated by century old trees...the new courtyard building adds to this ecosystem with four honey locus trees, two ponds and a boarder of tall planting.
The building’s expression to its residential edge is soft; made with landscape, colour and long shadows.
To its industrial edge, a tough metal skin is carved and perforated to reveal its vibrantly coloured exterior corridors.
Uniquely Sustainable, the exterior corridors provide sweeping views of the city and require no daytime lighting, heating or cooling (sensors activate in-floor heating in winter).
Water stored in the two large underground cisterns comes to the surface in the courtyard ponds. The cistern’s water is also the source for the landscape irrigation.
Trees, water, sun and shadow are collected in the courtyard to create a social space where children play and adults converse.
