Courtyard Housing - American Lawn is a conceptual apartment living proposal for an urban site.
The lawn has persisted as the archetypal American landscape because it is a surface that supports our notions of play, control and territory.
A neatly clipped yard of grass simultaneously conveys to our neighbors that we are proud of home ownership and possess enough civic mindedness to care for the territory that visually occupies both the private and public realm.
The problem with the traditional courtyard is that, because of ambiguous territory, it tends to be reduced to a purely visual space. By placing the open space on the roof you eliminate the negative associations of active play and public imposition from the stoops of the private dwellings.
This project combines flexible outdoor public space with private residences, that open to abundant light and fresh air.
