In the vibrant neighbourhood of Nayapalli, Bhubaneshwar, The Courtyard House graces a plot of approximately 5600 sq.ft. Here, a captivating fusion of traditional Vastu principles and modern architecture comes to life, showcasing a unique approach to design.
The multigenerational family had a clear vision: to create a legacy home rooted in their deep spiritual beliefs and Vastu principles while satisfying the needs of future generations. At present, the residence caters to a family of four, accommodating both immediate and extended family members, with a separate tenant floor.
The architectural style leans towards modernity with a central courtyard, complemented by a dual interior palette - Indian contemporary and French classical, tailored for communal guest spaces. A subdued palette forms the wall colours, harmonising with timber panelling above doors. The exposed concrete ceiling contrasts with timber false ceilings in key areas like the Puja room and the master bedroom's study area. Customised lighting fixtures add an element of drama, strategically placed in spaces where wall lighting is less suitable. Seamlessness characterises the built-in furniture, creating a fluid continuity within the interiors. Movable furniture pieces follow a contemporary, functional style with touches of classical colonial design, as per the client's request for added utility.
Distinct spaces unfold organically within the residence. The Puja Room, designed for large gatherings, features intricate timber detailing and stone walls, layered for texture, framing the central puja panel. The central courtyard enjoys abundant natural light from skylights, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor. The Dining Room, a pragmatic yet luxurious space, features exclusive artwork adorning the walls, designed in collaboration with the principal architect. In the Tea Corner & Baithak, each space in the open area surrounding the courtyard has its unique character, offering distinct atmospheres for relaxation and socialising.
Wood plays a crucial role in crafting the distinctive four-sided Chaukhat, while stone, selected with precision according to Vastu principles, forms the foundation and inlays throughout the space. False ceilings are kept to a minimum, favouring a blend of exposed concrete and timber accents. The project integrates Geo Thermal Cooling into the HVAC scheme, contributing to its energy efficiency and sustainability. Natural materials are embraced throughout, with an emphasis on easy maintenance and longevity.
The Courtyard House stands out as a sanctuary of simplicity and spirituality, a reflection of the residents' earnest lifestyle. It embodies a refined balance between tradition and modernity, creating functional and deeply meaningful living spaces.
