Currently under construction, the
Cottage Lofts project represents a clever rethinking of land
subdivision by integrating interlocking 'l-shaped' lots. Six individually-owned cottage footprints contain loft-like double-height volumes and open floor plans that combine the benefits of private, detached townhouses with the advantages of a communal environment. Private
gardens and two-car garages help to complete a neighborhood-sensitive typological response to transitional residential infill needs. Naturally lit and ventilated volumes of living space encourage owner ?personalization? and the tailoring of a single-family lifestyle within a more dense urban setting. The construction employs a light-gauge metal framing system of recycled steel, rejecting conventional wood studs and stucco construction. Furthermore, it aspires to be ?forward-thinking? not only in its creative living patterns, but also in its environmental responses to local site conditions. Specifically, the project
boasts a passive storm water retention plan, ?green? materials, an accommodation
for solar technology, recycled materials, natural daylighting & ventilation, pocket garden spaces. From an urban perspective, this project aspires to offer a thoughtful, new pattern for living in the heart
of a medium-density residential zone.
