The design purpose is the reuse of a rural house that, due to the town expansion, has been absorbed into the urban area of Altedo di Malalbergo. The rural house has become a mark in relation to the context, thus allowing its re-functionalization with commercial and service activities and the insertion of a new multifunctional structure.
The project develops as a synthesis of two architectural typologies: on the one hand, the rural house itself, a type introduced in the Po valley during the Napoleonic period, and on the other, the “People House”, a functional type of political and social origins which is linked to the organization of social life in particular Italian regions at the beginning of the 20th century and which represents a site of strong cultural aggregation.
The multifunctional hall, designed as a pure volume with larch covering, shows all its contemporaneity in a balanced relation with the context allowing the identification of the different historical phases of the building. The wooden volume is lifted from the ground thus underlining its lightness, while its projecting front makes it recognizable along the bustling via Nazionale.
The rural house courtyard has been reinterpreted in a modernist way with big glass windows on the south and south-east sides, which guarantee the climate control of the interior.
The choice of the materials, natural larch for external covering, industrial wood and fibro-wood for the inside covering, testifies the strong interest in the life-cycle of the materials and its sustainability. The thermal insulation performed by the technologies used and the correct position of the windows, favouring solar irradiation in winter and good ventilation in summer, made it possible to increase energetic efficiency, thus satisfying the users’ needs and controlling energy consumption.
