The site for the Doddanavar brothers
corporate office is a triangular plot of land measuring around an acre and a
half. The brief called for an office building with two divergent functions.
A back office for the main work force of the company, and
the management wing that houses the directors. The two sections have different
needs of accessibility to the public as well as connectivity with one another.
The two sections, with differing
requirements are conceived as two linear strands that interlock around each
other, and in the process, generate a sequence of courtyards. The blocks are
physically integrated at the ground through the courtyard, as well as a glass
bridge at the top floor.
Skin as space The climatic strategy is evolved as a response to the west facing
site. The linear block of the back office directly faces the west, because of
the site conditions. What could be a difficult climatic orientation is resolved
by conceiving the western skin as space. The western side of the building is clad
with frame less glass. This is countered by juxtaposing a steel skin of
perforated louvers in front. The space between the two glass and perforated skins is made explicit by giving
it a width of 3 meters and populating it with terraces and gardens.
Eco response as social strategy This interstice, that's is a climatic
response also functions as a social space of interactions. It transforms what
would be a generic office block into a highly individualized work space. It is this exploration of the interstice
that is central to the project.
Landscape as an interweave Landscape in the site is imagined as an
interweave between the built space and its surroundings. The
buildings tango around one another, creating a series of courtyards.
Essentially, there are two main courts,
an entrance court, in front of the back office block and accentuated by a
cantilevered conference room; and a oat court that is ensconced within the
buildings. These two main courts are connected by a
landscape tissue that is further accentuated by a glass bridge on top,
connecting the two buildings.
SummaryThe
corporate office balances differing contextual and programmatic parameters to
create a space that is iconic yet accessible. Environmental concerns about the
micro climate are wedded to social concerns of creating a more humane, more
conducive office environment.
