Corner Room at the Town Hall Hotel

The Corner Room at the Town Hall Hotel in
East London was designed and completed in early 2011.
We worked closely with Michelin chef Nuno Mendes to create a casual
but comfortable dining setting in a space which felt 'East End'
and local, but also one that complemented the existing surroundings of
the hotel.
The Corner Room is discreetly tucked away in the corner of the first
floor and was the old Assembly Room of the Bethnal Green Town Hall.
We aimed to preserve and revive as much as possible of the existing
room and to strip back the wood to its original natural state.
Objects such as vintage food tins and enamel ware were collected from
the flea markets of East London and these fill the shelves of the
old wall-hung filing cabinets.
A 1940's Victorian cast iron spiral staircase leading to nowhere
also adds a focal point to the room. The main feature is the back wall;
tiled with glazed underground tiles and adorned with original vintage
industrial lights hanging from an industrial scaffolding steel pole.
The original vintage lights were all sourced from around Europe and
range from 80 to 100 years in age.
All furniture and graphics work was also designed by Makemei.
