A central component of the design concept is the integration of the mushroom building into the Copernicus Gymnasium building complex and the creation of a uniform appearance. This is achieved on the one hand by the homogeneous façade design made of red clinker brick, and on the other hand by the use of the areas below the cantilevered parts of the mushroom building, creating a compact three-story structure. The mushroom building is accessed via the schoolyard.
The floor plan is characterized by a simple and clear internal structure. The all-day areas are arranged along the central foyer with a self-study center, library, and computer room. The upper floors are accessed via two new stairwells. The existing centrally located staircase will be demolished, but the stairwell will be retained as an atrium/air space to improve natural lighting and visual communication.
The two upper floors are structured in almost identical ways. Each level has an inner core with toilets, a cleaning supplies room, and technical/server rooms, as well as classrooms on the outside. Numerous openings in the roof allow plenty of daylight into the interior of the building and significantly improve the quality of the central areas.
