While designing a new home for this client across the road, a wildland fire destroyed the 1bdrm, 800 sq.ft. cottage they were living in at the time. The plan had always been to build a new, larger "dream home", and use the cottage as a guest house. The fire changed the schedule and plans a little bit, and the main priority quickly became to rebuild what had been lost, which was the cottage. In the exact same location on site, we designed this compact, efficient, replacement cottage, but this time made it more practical for the family of three. There are now 2 small bedrooms, and a luxurious bathroom, in addition to a living / dining / kitchen area that frames views of the Santa Barbara coast. This area of Santa Barbara is somewhat rural, with rugged canyons. It is still a high fire area, which led to the use of many fire resistive materials such as plaster, metal siding and roofing, and concrete. The exposed wood rafters are all treated timbers.
