Situated within the degraded industrial neighborhood of Callowhill, Philadelphia, the Cooling Tower is a contemporary urban bathhouse that seeks to be integrated into the vernacular landscape. Adjacent to an abandoned highline, the module of the localized structure is systemized to seamlessly rise from an existing building. This amalgamation of local structural proportions and materials both honor the existing topography and further inspire the process of urban renewal. Simultaneously porous and secure, concrete panels cautiously infill the structural steel grid, leaving apertures for light and water transmission. Remaining is a passive and protected community space that promotes an analogous model of programmatic and community integration. As industrial cooling towers are used to remove heat from various sources, the urban bathhouse Cooling Tower serves a similar purpose in providing the public with cooling facilities as intended by the original bathhouses and municipal pools.
