Coo House is located at Nishitokyo in Tokyo, Japan. The town is developing but still has farms, fruit gardens, and woods between residential areas, and is situated in a patchwork pattern. The site is 13 feet in width and nestled between a road and a path over a covered conduit. These two lines will continue to exist in the future, so the streams were drawn into the house via three margins with windows.
The first margin is on the first floor and connects directly to the north road and the south path. This space could be used for various activities such as entering, engaging in children’s play activities, growing plants, or drying laundry. The closed space walled by a blackboard includes a bedroom, a closet, and a bathroom. It faces this margin space and receives light and air from it.
The second margin is by the window on the second floor which is for a living space. It hangs over toward the south passage and makes a bench. The third margin is a terrace facing this bench on the opposite side. Two windows by these margins with the same sizes but on different levels promote airflow into the interior.
The small margins in this small house connect the residential space with the exterior streams and create a flow of light, air, and movement in the interior.
