Everybody loves a hidden room or secret chamber. The challenge of this
apartment combination in tony Gramercy Park was to unify the public
space while masking the new private master suite and study. The master
suite lies hidden beyond a threshold of storage, sliding doors, and
rolling bookcases. This thick moving wall of storage serves many roles.
The rolling bookcase is a piece of functional art. Patinated aluminum
shelves with a perforated spiderweb pattern highlight the threshold.
Variable perforation densities allow different levels of privacy and
light. Each one can be flipped upside-down and inside-out to allow for
fully customizable storage and pattern. Beyond the convertible wall the
client wanted a relaxing space to work, rest, and refresh out of plain
sight. Two existing baths were combined into one large master bath and
dressing area. The bath is modern with spa-like qualities. Strong
classic materials and the use of wood flooring on the walls evoke
nature. A limited use of exposed hardware mixed with a series of niches
and nooks limit visual clutter and reinforce the hidden qualities
throughout.
