It is a place for remembering, learning, and inspiringhope and reconciliation. It is a symbolic sculpturecomposed of sound elements (existing concretepads) and two iconic forms (the horizontal andvertical bars). The composition can be read as ajourney towards hope. The horizontal (twisted)bar is a metaphor for the arduous journey of thecontrabands and freedmen from slavery to freedom. The vertical form signifies hope and reconciliationby giving the participant a new perspective. The horizontal bar that hovers delicately above theground, only touching it at the existing concretepads allows the visitor to get close to individualgraves. This proximity allows the observer tobecome a participant and engage with the personalhistory of the individuals buried at the cemetery. The connection is made deeper by the appearanceof individual names branded on the wood plankfloor.Seen from a distance, the tower becomes a landmarkof the history and existence of the cemetery, andpays homage to those that have been forgotten.Additionally, the tower is meant to be a symbol ofhope.
