House was designed to suit the specific site attributes and the warm humid summers and mild winter, which characterize the Sunshine Coast subtropical climate. The main aim was to achieve cool interiors for summer and provide some warmth for winter.
House orientation, natural ventilation, insulation, and appropriate shading have been incorporated into the overall design. In addition, suspended timber flooring and the use of lightweight construction were chosen and a mix of louvers, sliding windows, and internal openings were specified and located to promote natural airflow. The combined design components take advantage of good sea breezes and its thermal mass keeps the house cool in summer and warm in winter.
To highlight beautiful views, several “picture” windows were created. A greater feeling of space was achieved through the use of high ceilings and the reduction of ‘dead space.’ All internal and external openings on the first floor together with a central open void with louvers were created to allow air and light to carve up the spaces around the house.
Not only were choices of an environmental product incorporated into the project design, but greener options were also chosen in its construction techniques. Environmentally preferable and local building materials, appliances, lighting, flooring, countertops, paints, and finishes were specified externally and internally for this project.
This house does not have a visually intrusive appearance and provides comfort and a well being feeling for its occupants.
