"Overall Concept
In April 2015, a new concept space was unveiled at the expanded connecting corridor in Narita Airport?s Terminal 2 Building, through which many international visitors get their first glimpse of Japan.
In addition to serving as a corridor, 7 ?Spaces? were added to create a new lounge area that evokes daily comfort and provides useful facilities.
Event Space, Kids Space, Massage Space*, Relax Space, Café & Bar Space*, Personal Space, and Bench Space. The Spaces are arranged with consideration for the amount of time visitors are in the airport, with facilities for travelers to spend longer and more private times as they move into the center.
* Indicates commercial spaces for tenants.
Design Elements & Concept
The space was designed to be a luxurious and open airport lounge ? a place reflecting Japan?s spirit of omotenashi.
An overall ?Japanese-feeling? space is created through the traditional motifs of lattice patterns, the four seasons, horizons and verticality, and margins aiming to give ?WA (Japanese)?feeling. The different washi (Japanese paper) patterns adorning the inside of the gate-shaped lattice were carefully selected for each area. The furniture within gives margins to the space and layers with the lattice.
The corridor uses a year-round control system that allows the lighting to reflect the four seasons and cater to travelers who visit at varying times and spend varying amounts of time at the terminal. With alternating skylights and ceiling lighting, the system changes the lighting to reflect the seasons at different hours and in different months. The relationship between the two types of lighting and the gate lattice gives the sense of a space that simultaneously offers freedom and security. Though inside, there is a sense of the outside, allowing travelers to pass their time in comfort."
