Our proposal for the competition ‘Ramses Square’, organised by the National Organisation of Urban Harmony, Cairo (Al Qahira) in Egypt. The proposal was besides a urban design plan for Ramses Square a master plan for Cairo and two other important squares: Tahrir Square and Ataba Square. Fragments of the report (total of 49 pages) about our proposal for Tahrir Square:
TAHRIR SQUARETahrir is located near the Nile. It is linked with the Nile by the infrastructure (bridge and subway line). It is also on the edge of an ’island’ that is visited by many tourists: the Egyptian Museum (pre-historic era to the Greco-Roman period) and to a lower extend, the hotels. If you look at the survey of the National Authority of Tunnels you can see that this station is used differently then Mubarak station (Ramses Square) and Ataba station: it doesn’t attract as many travellers during holidays as during working days. The function of it is more related to work / business then a recreational use.
Plan Tahrir Square
Our vision is to use this junction of subway-lines, making this area more accessible for a recreational, educational and cultural purpose:
-Recreational by linking this ‘island’ with the Nile by arch over the roads Korniesh El Nile & Kornesh El Nile along the river by a platform. A platform that can be connected with Zamalek and its park across the river by a bridge for pedestrians.
- Educational and cultural by linking the station with a museum where the other impressive ‘monuments’ are presented, invented during the Middle Ages when Al Qahira was the biggest and wealthiest city in the world. These two spatial plans open this area for tourists as well as for inhabitants of Al Qahira. Using the urban strategy of multifunctional land use at the route of the existing subway tunnel as a basis for new buildings, routes for the pedestrian flow and bus park. Replacing the bus park from the Kasr El Niel to the Meret Basha near the Egyptian Museum, making a new urban development possible at the site of the former bus park.We also looked for solutions to improve the traffic flow around and especially along the Egyptian Museum. Here you can experience the creation of an ‘island’ the best, while even the Nile can’t be seen…By roofing the auto route along the Nile it is possible to construct a slip road that is well connected with the Kobry 6 October. Furthermore can roofing of (parts of) the route along the Nile increase the traffic flow by the creating of more lanes. And more important, it will be a great asset for the creation of public space of a high spatial quality.
