Our proposal for the competition ‘Ramses Square’, organised by the National Organisation of Urban Harmony, Cairo (Al Qahira) in Egypt. Not only a proposal for Ramses Square but also a master plan for Cairo and two other important squares: Tahrir Square and Ataba Square. Fragments of the report (total of 49 pages) about Ataba Square:Ataba square is since its design (late 19th century) the link between two cultures: the Arab (the Old Town) and European (Ezbekiyya) culture. Nowadays the urban pattern is the only remain of these two worlds: narrow streets < > wide streetssmall buildings < > city castlesextravert < > introvertPlan Ataba SquareOur proposal is to combine these two urban patterns in one structure that connects these two with the Ezbekiyya garden. ‘Absorb’ in this building the large infrastructures (flyovers and tunnel). Designing a network of routes in it along different sizes of offices, shops, housing, green spaces. Giving it a theme that is connected with the future and so important for a metropolis as Al Qahira: Sustainability.
