K'hal Ahavas Torah is a small orthodox congregation in Miami Beach, Florida. They recently outgrew their old Synagogue of 900 square feet. They decided for the next couple of years to rent and found a 1,750 square foot space in a 3rd story of an office building. The program was to include a main worship room with separate sections for men and women, kid’s room, and a kitchen. A few challenges arose:
1st challenge: Being on the 3rd floor of an office building the space had a lot of North windows and focus was being lost out of them. 1st Solution: Designed an east accent wall to focus worshiper’s attention East (traditional direction of prayer) while providing an opportunity for art.
2nd challenge: The main worship room had to be used for various events. The typical design of a stationary Mechitzah (traditional room divider to separate men from women during prayers) would limit this. 2nd Solution: A custom designed Mechitzah on wheels that can be moved depending on the function. A one way mirrored glass was put in to allow women to feel like they are part of an open room.
3rd challenge: A kids room can be messy and loud. 3rd Solution: Put in carpet tiles to help dampen the sound while allowing a greater ease to clean. If one carpet tile gets damaged all they have to do is replace that one tile instead of a traditional carpet where you would have to cut out the piece or replace the entire carpeting.
4th challenge: Old kitchen had a lack of storage, the congregation tended to buy items in bulk. 4th Solution: Provided stainless steel counter tops and open shelving. This way they can stack boxes easily while at the same time prepare for large catered vents and allow easy clean up.
5th challenge: Being an office space they were limited in height and they wanted to gain as much height to make a grand space as possible. 5th Solution: Designed a coffered ceiling which allowed for pockets to be raised as high as possible while creating space for the HVAC and utilities to run uninterrupted. While at the same time creating an interested focal point.
From taking an empty raw shell in an office building to designing and implementing a well designed space to aid the worship and festivities. Since completion there have been prayer services, family events, speeches and dinners. Overall the Rabbi and congregation were very pleased with the final design and functionality of the space.
