The study is about the establishment and organization of the first 950 m. of the northern breakwater of the Venetian Fortress Koules to the first plateau and aspires to transform this part of the breakwater as a gathering space, recreation, artistic expression and creativity for the city's residents, giving the character of a "cultural promenade" without "suffering" the great Venetian monument. Thus, they proposed a series of interventions and reinforces the already existing functions.
The boardwalk to the end of the jetty and back again begins somewhere after the end of the Venetian monument, where the pier is not a clear boundary with the sea. This part is the most convenient to sit in contact with the water and Giannakopoulou protected from the winds. Therefore proposed a minimum infrastructure of artificial terraces, which bridge elevation level of the pier in sea level and create an outdoor seating - theater while following the curved line of the maritime boundary. The operation is in line with the existing environment, not in confrontation with Koules and discreetly marks the start of a cultural promenade.
For the northern vertical shield proposed investment in its lower part with exposed concrete and alternating with this one zone from sandblasted concrete with smooth surfaces at regular intervals, where we displayed ideograms from the Minoan era. The second part of the curtain lined with shotcrete (gunite) and passable horizontal section of concrete. Moreover, along the panel recommended the suspension display rack with informative material (texts, drawings, photos, etc.) about the history of the fort and the works of the modern port, stands that will host renowned artists creations of Heraklion and larger surfaces for graffiti on the free expression of the new city, to integrate art in the city's everyday life, particularly in urban gathering places.
Also proposed a special corridor for walking and jogging on the tracks of the old railway and the current imaginary corridor that follow those who come to the jetty for jogging and cycling. Then a series of living and vertical lighting elements rotate on the inner side of the pier, and sedentary monolithic surfaces in free forms raise along the surface of said screen, further highlighting the linear development.
The architectural proposal is completed with the formation of the first plateau of the breakwater, which includes a covered seating area, access stairs to the upper part of the north wall, plumbing, etc. The composition of the indoor seating area was in such a way that it can accommodate during the summer various cultural events such as theatrical performances, concerts, film screenings, etc., while the shape of the roof is inspired by the image of the crane opposite side of the harbor. The necessary basis for structural reasons - foundation creates two terraces - seats, giving the area the character of a small square.
The study as a whole is a mild intervention and materials proposed attach a style that blends with the natural environment and cope with the environmental specificities of the area. Nothing in solution does not compete with the Venetian monument, nor alter the strong linear growth of the breakwater, but rather enhances it as a runner element. Moreover, the proposed uses would enrich the character of this area as a public space and help him remain a vibrant part of the city of Heraklion. Besides being viewed as a "cultural promenade" might serve as an attraction for visitors to our city, being one of the first images taken anyone entering for the first time in the port of Heraklion.
