With a commitment to improving human health through innovative therapies, this global biopharmaceutical company sought to create a dynamic next-generation workplace that embraces their culture of well-being. Design of the eight-story fit-out is a significant departure from the usual research facility, recognizing that to achieve the social connection that drives strong working relationships, a transparent and agile environment is critical.
The design program revolves around key concepts of arriving, networking, focusing, and supporting – successfully employing target-value design to strategically invest in special features. Neighborhoods are organized with these concepts in mind, transitioning across each floorplate from social and collaborative areas to the opposite end where quiet spaces better serve heads-down concentration. Free from desk assignments, employees are empowered to direct their own workday in a way that fits the sensory needs of changing tasks and varied work styles, allowing everyone the opportunity to feel productive and fulfilled.
In the laboratories open, collaborative space dominates – achieved through overhead utilities and mobile benches, nearly limitless configurations with minimal change-over time are possible. Biosafety cabinets for tissue culture safely reside in the open labs alleviating the need for staff to work in tiny closed-off rooms. Transparency between the lab and office environments adds yet another layer of connection. Punched openings allow visibility between lab and office spaces, providing an avenue for daylight to transmit across each floor.
Design diversity is highlighted by a unique color palette; no two floors are the same. Graphic applications and light fixtures flowing through the corridors draw inspiration from biology and functional-related themes. Features such as an outdoor garden terrace, living green walls monitoring indoor air quality, and a conference room that converts to a yoga studio have contributed to a Fitwel 2 Star Rating and LEED Gold certification, reinforcing the commitment to health and well-being.
