This project is a symbolic
expression of the contemporary cultural condition divided between the
inheritance of the Modern Movement, the Classical tradition and the Neo
Avant-Garde of the end of our century. It encapsulates a prolonged research of
diverse architectural events stratified in time: a reinterpretation of the
Roman topography and an archeology of the now subterranean city through a
tectonic recreation of an artificial ground plane, up to a series of aerial
volumes, wholly contemporary in their forms, generated by processes of fragmentation,
and their insertion within a hollow three-dimensional structure, in short, an
abstract reinterpretation of the architecture of EUR itself.
The Conference Center
?Italia? at EUR is a magnet that attracts activity. It generates a central
focus of concrete physical images of our contemporary existence that in Rome
have no architectural translation. The project is thought out on two different
scales, each in relationship to the other: on the urban scale that affects the
traffic system and reverberates throughout the EUR district and Rome beyond,
and on the architectural scale that proposes within this single complex of
extraordinarily diverse functions an image of exceptional creative force.
The urban dimension
The project radically
reinterprets the urbanistic arrangement of the district. We have based this
scheme on the analysis of the two discrete functions of via Cristoforo Colombo
as both the principal interurban artery and the central axis of EUR. This
project proposes a doubling of the roadway on two superimposed levels, starting
at the lake and continuing through to the piazzale dell'Industria e
dell'Agricoltura. The underground level is reserved for high-speed
through-traffic that, with no connection to the activities of the area above,
serves merely as the entrance to and egress from the city of Rome. Freed of
cars, via Colombo is transformed into a quiet, tree-lined boulevard, largely
pedestrian and outfitted for strolling and related activities.
The architectural
dimension
The nucleus of the complex
is in the form of a large glazed gallery which provides its principal access.
The gallery slices through the structure and constitutes one of its principal
architectural events. One arrives at this gallery either from viale Europa or
viale Asia as well as from the new boulevard following three ample routes that
etch their paths upon the elevated artificial ground level of the complex,
cantilevered in long and sculptural walkways, ramps, stairs and elevators
rising from the street level and signaling emphatically the presence of access
to the complex even from far away.
The project is vertically
divided into three parts, symbolically defined as the piazza at the center, the
ground below and the sky above. The complex is measured off in plan by a system
of regular quadrants with an ample thirty-meter module marked off by large
cruciform piers.
