The competition was held by the university "Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie" for its architecture students, and had the proposal of remodelling one of its buildings, in that case, the João Calvino Building, which accomodates great part of the university's administration, a small auditorium and several classes from different courses.
The university wanted the building to be a mark in São Paulo, and not just another ordinary construction.
The main goal was about rethinking the facades as well as the ground floor, and was important to keep in mind that the original construction is one of the first modernist buildings in São Paulo, and it used to be the brazilian Nestle headquarters in the past.
This project represented below received the third prize.
The facades were coated with louvers, (the building had a lot of insolation issues) composed by plates on each side, one with LEDS and the other side photovoltaics; so the building could get the sun light during the day and use as energy during the night, such for enlighten the panels, and also collaborating to the air conditioner. When the plates are opened you can still see the original building on the back and its primary features, which has an important history to the city, and when the panels are closed the colored LEDS enhance the building in the middle of São Paulo’s concrete jungle.
On the ground level the use remained the same, with an exhibition area, and the building's entrance, such as small gardens outside.
On the mezzanine is where the biggest changes happened. It held a small auditorium, a few rooms used for different needs, and also a bank.
The visibility this mezzanine gives to the city is huge, so (in our thinking) it should be treated as one of the main highlighted places in the whole building, where people walking by the university would notice it.
Therefore a new library was created with big glass panels used as shutdowns. The bank was keeped in the same place, and the auditorium is now, integrated with the library, shelvs can be moved in different positions creating different spaces.
On the mezzanine's upper floor, wasn’t accessible before, now holds a garden with an open sky cinema at night.
Concluding, the project wanted to readjust some lost areas, trying to get the students to use the building, but without taking off its routine and uses, and that was the reason for this competiton to be created, so the building could become again, an architecture icon in the city.
