The Concrete Ribbon House is an extension that reshapes the back of an existing home in Malaysia. Designed as both an addition and a transformation, the project features a board-formed concrete “ribbon” that wraps, folds, and bends. This design softens the shift between the old and new, giving the house a distinct character when viewed from behind.
Instead of using traditional methods to add mass, we treated the extension as a change in space and materials. Here, the concrete ribbon—which is usually seen as hard and heavy—serves as a softening feature. It flows across walls and ceilings, folds into benches, and frames views of the garden. This design creates a smooth connection between the structure and the landscape. What used to be a standard back elevation is now a sculptural feature that is both subtle and striking, intentional yet natural.
The new addition contains the dining area, family room, and wet kitchen. Even though it is only a single story tall, the experience of the space feels elevated and expanded due to the ribbon’s shape. Its bends and extensions create a solid feeling that enhances the sense of enclosure while also opening the area to natural light, fresh air, and views.
Inside the wet kitchen, a translucent glass block wall filters natural light into the interior while ensuring visual privacy. This gentle interplay of light and shadow adds to the home's calming environment, reflecting the texture of the concrete and the feel of the terracotta panels used inside. These panels serve as quiet spatial dividers, anchoring the space with warmth and subtly guiding movement in the open layout.
Every aspect of the extension reflects material honesty and simplicity. The board-formed concrete holds the memory of its creation; each grain imprint symbolizes time and craftsmanship. As light changes throughout the day, the textured surfaces become vibrant, introducing a dynamic element to the built form.
The Concrete Ribbon House is more than just a physical addition; it is a new interpretation. It extends the life and character of the existing home through its form, texture, and light. In this way, it transforms the daily routines of family life into a quietly engaging experience.
