ThickSpace is an ongoing series of installations
that explore the possibilities of architecture as event. Big enough to be
inhabited, small enough to be mobile, ThickSpace comes in many forms and
materials. The project is an on-going collaboration between two offices (ZHUBO + FBRK).Over
the course of human history, vision has increasingly become privileged over our
other senses. When one of our senses is weakened, the others become stronger,
more sensitive. Conversely, when one of our senses becomes overly dominant, the
others become weaker and contribute less and less to our perception of the
world. Our daily environments are becoming ever more cluttered
with visual stimuli. Images of infinite variety storm us from every angle –
magazines, newspapers, billboards, televisions, computer screens, street signs,
i – things, blackberry's (no longer a kind of fruit!) – bombarding our eyes
with information, most of which we do not need. We are forced to filter
incalculable quantities of sensory data. As our attention is more and more
occupied with the filtration of such ubiquitous data – mostly 2D – we become
less and less sensitive to four-dimensional spatial experience, something we
might also call Reality. To the extent that nothing exists (or at least ceases
to matter) without our perceiving it, the very physicality of space – its
substance, its density, its psycho-physical thickness – is threatened
by this increased deficit of attention – spatial
ADHD! Thus we believe that contemporary space, especially in the public
realm, is becoming thin. ThickSpace is a series of installations which have the intention of engaging the public in a-typical spatial experiences. The idea of thickening was conceived as a reaction to the high-speed, hyper-visual environments that have become increasingly ubiquitous – a way of slowing people down, if only momentarily, and offering them a way to experience a variety of otherwise normative situations through an altered spatial medium.Authors: Feng Guo Chuan, Aaron Robin, Laura BelevicaTeam: Zhang Chun Liang, Phi Zhi Bo, Liu Hui, Zhou Zhi Wei, Zhan Xu Xun
