House M is located on the hillside, overviewing the entire city of Stuttgart. The existing house of 1957 was cleaned and newly organized on the two main levels, while the roof was taken of completely and replaced by a rectangular box out of steel and glass. The box, claded with aluminum-panels, serves as the clients office and gives the whole building its new identity. On the westside, the new roof-volume overlaps the existingwall and defines the entrance zone. A solid black staircase, made out of steel, hanging below the volume, leads into the office, thereby not touching the ground. The office is designed as a horizontal space, monochrome in yellow white, not hiding the steel structure and the ceiling with its ondulated metal sheets. The atmosphere is different to the living spaces, pure industrial and with references to the case study houses in L.A..The north side is entirely glazed with sliding windows, allowing the connection to the big roofterrace and emphasizing the view over the city. A glossy epoxy floor increases the effect of a bright space, full of natural light. By entering the apartment, oneself can experience the entire depth of the house. A perforated volume, which functions as two-sided furniture, seperates corridor and kitchen. Its shiny surface contrasts the black floor, made out of rough slate. All the living spaces have a wooden floor, made out of dark, smoked oak.A lightbox with a historic motif, showing the old house before its face-lift, accentuates the staircase.Although House M is based on old walls and edges, it becomes a new house with a strong own identity.
