CONC CONtext (re)Creation
Context
Located in the Yangnam area of Gyeongju, famous for its columnar joints (especially its fan-shaped columnar joints, designated as a natural monument), the site faces the East Coast Road connecting the north and south along the East Coast to the east, and the Wave Sori Road from Eupcheon Port to Haseo Port along the area where the coastal columnar joints are formed. The east coast road on the west side and the wave sound road on the east side form a high and low difference of about 3 to 4M, and the architecture to be formed here had to have natural access to both roads, both of which had to be an appropriate architectural landscape, and functionally and spatially harmonized without compromising the architectural functions of the existing columnar joint observatory as much as possible.
Creating new context
Considering the locational and functional characteristics of coastal cafes first, the building was arranged in a fan shape (like the shape of a fan-shaped columnar joint) so that the interior space of the building was closest to the East Sea. The existing columnar joint observatory and the low mass that connects the parking space on the west side of the land physically and spatially are at the center of the building, but the axis of the observatory and the central mass are planned to be shifted so as not to impair the presence of the observatory and the view from the observatory. Based on this central mass axis, mass that rose up by plan was created along the stairway leading to both sides.
The floor on the first floor was planned in multiple stages from the west in the order of terraced seats - main settlement spaces - external decks and water spaces, and the entrance of the columnar joint observatory and the east side entrance were placed close to each other so that the physical distance between the observatory and the cafe space could be reduced. If you go up to the second floor along two stairs formed in the mass that rises on both sides of the building, there are spaces containing the cool East Sea landscape, which is a mixture of settlement and movement between the inside and the outside. This movement and settlement also lead to the roof of the building, where there are outdoor stairs on the rooftop that can pass through the functionally and sculpturally generated mass shape (like a naturally rising columnar joint), and a rooftop space with a distant view of the columnar joint coast.
Re-Creation ⇒ Recreation!
It is hoped that the building, which is plannedly formed by the geographical context of the site and the functional characteristics of the building, will be a landscape where the columnar joint observatory is harmonized between the joint of the mass on the east coast, and that the columnar joint coast, the observatory, and the cafe space will be close to each other on the west wave sound road to function as a mixture of various settlements and empirical movements. It is hoped that these landscapes and CONC's space will play a significant role as a new recreational venue along with the columnar joint in Yangnam, Gyeongju.
