This project received an Honorable Award in a National Architecture Competition for the Information Center of the new Petrochemical Complex of Rio de Janeiro. The complex is one of the largest public infra-structure projects ever to be undertaken in Brazil, and is currently being coordinated by PETROBRAS, the state-owned oil company. The complex will be located in the municipality of Itaboraí, in the edge of Rio de Janeiro’s metropolitan region, next to a historical colonization site where there are the ruins of an old Christian Monastery from the 17th century. The Information Center will be located right at the Petrochemical Complex’s entrance and is constituted of a visitor center, a library, multimedia center, auditorium, 3D cinema, a museum of petrochemical technology and also about the history of the region’s colonization, and administration facilities. The design intended to turn the Information Center into a national reference in sustainable architecture, serving as a showcase of technologies that are still much underexplored in Brazil. Its architectural forms, while that of an impressive new landmark, also have a sinuous character that takes its inspiration in the surrounding’s natural landscape.
