In order for us to build a truly sustainable world we need more than smart buildings – we need smart, dependable people. We need a population that has a personal responsibility for holding each other accountable to a set of values. The BUILDINGcommunity project strives to address this seldom recognized, yet vital aspect of sustainability.
We have reached a point in the design industry where the technologies and methods needed to create "green structures" have become readily available. The tools, materials, and design expertise exist. We are now at a juncture where architects can start to reexamine the idea of sustainability through and broaden its scope.
Why do 25 families living miles apart develop a sense of community while 25 families living in the same building do not?
The BUILDINGcommunity project tries to combat two pervasive aspects of city life – anonymity and the diffusion of responsibility. By designing an environment that encourages a sense of community, we can start to facilitate the creation of a human infrastructure that acts to encourage positive changes in its members. In order to create a more sustainable world, we have to design an environment that encourages people to engage one another.
