Located in Papagou, a residential suburb near central Athens, Community House is a three-story residence designed for the families of two close friends on a 480 m² plot. The project reflects the desire to live together while maintaining autonomy and privacy. Sharing the land cost also made the project feasible in a city with steadily increasing property prices.
The building consists of two distinct residences with independent functions, yet it operates as a unified whole. Spaces were carefully tailored to each family’s needs, considering size, internal flows, and outdoor connections. Privacy is maintained through staggered levels and opposing orientations of the main living areas.
Coexistence is expressed through a network of shared spaces that flow vertically and horizontally, including external staircases connecting the courtyard, terraces, and ultimately the planted rooftop.
The roof serves as a central gathering place for swimming, exercise, cooking, dining, or outdoor screenings, with panoramic views of Mount Hymettus and the city. The semi-basement multipurpose space adapts to the residents’ needs, accommodating activities from sports and skating to workshops and social gatherings.
Low walls and railings encourage further engagement with the neighborhood, making Community House a model of contemporary urban living that prioritizes human scale, shared experiences, and meaningful social interaction.
