The Community Ecology Institute (CEI), and non-profit organization, purchased the last available farmland in Columbia, Maryland, in 2019. A 3,500 square foot unpermitted timber frame barn structure, originally intended as a residence, was on the property. The building had no mechanical system, limited electrical and plumbing hook-up, a completely unfinished and uninsulated second floor, and a very leaky roof. CEI’s mission was to retrofit the barn into a community engagement center using environmentally friendly design and construction principles to not only house their many workshops and educational programs but to also educate the public on strategies they could incorporate into their homes. We coordinated with the Howard County building department, structural inspections, contractors, a pro-bono MEP consultant, and the Board of the organization to develop a full set of architectural drawings for construction, including furniture plans, a layout for a future graywater system, and details for construction strategies to retrofit the building to be Net Zero with the addition of solar panels. We also provided assistance to the Executive Director for funding opportunities in the form of narratives, energy models, and rendered drawings.
