The new shop renovation of Milwaukee, Wisconsin based retailer Commonplace completes an overhaul of a turn-of-the-century neighborhood storefront into an ideal retail environment for carefully curated design objects and accessories. Designed and built by TRETOW, an architect-led design/build studio based in Milwaukee, the new design was crafted to provide individual products the real estate to stand out and be independently viewed.
Anchored by a more than 50-foot long piece of custom white oak casework, customers are encouraged to snake through the shop to view products by following along its expressive geometry as it runs along the wall and into the middle of the space. White shelving stacks neatly up the wall providing additional product display space for the small shop. The shelves also create a series of horizontal datums that mediate existing architecture at the front of the shop with the proportions of new architectural additions at the rear.
At the rear, a corrugated back wall with concealed sliding door creates a subtle, but visually interesting focal point out of what was previously an underutilized area of the space. Visitors will also find the same gloss white texture and custom detailing carried through to the face of cash wrap for a seamless customer experience.
A distinct customer experience was the top priority for Commonplace and the small space. As such, cohesive detailing can be found throughout the space, encouraging an act of discovery that surprises visitors and gives a reason for customers to linger.
