Commercial Centre Toriportti by PAVE Architects revitalises old premises
Finnish design office PAVE Architects has carried out a major overhaul and extension of old business premises into a commercial centre in Oulu, Finland.
Situated by the downtown Rotuaari Promenade, the four-storey white-rendered building is a listed building from 1936 by architect Gustav Strandberg and the five-storey glass-walled building by architect Risto Harju is from 1970. Old business premises of a telephone company, the buildings were wholly renovated with the original character retained and revamped. A new, inviting main entrance at the corner of the 1970s building opens to both adjacent streets with smaller entrances on both sides.
The renovation of the glass-walled building strongly honours the original vision of architect Risto Harju with the new main entrance placed where the original was as a contemporary niche and the façade getting a subtle update with renewed glazing. The backlit glasses with decorative stickers and other façade lighting solutions help create an intriguing ambiance in the evening and darker times of the year.
The two buildings were joined together and a contemporary extension was built. The space between the structures forms now a five-storey high courtyard. A glass ceiling connecting to a glass wall at one end covers the entire courtyard space.
The new, contemporary courtyard extension with its unique idiom and a façade consisting of glass walls and wood pattern laminate façade panels makes a truly striking impression and creates an intriguing contrast with the renovated old structure. The ground floor houses three business spaces in varying use, a café, and three restaurants.
With a growing demand for business premises in the heart of the city, the upper floors were designed for office use. Stylish, contemporary solutions were planned carefully to fulfil the needs of the companies. A distinct yet subtle border between an office and a conference room was achieved with compatible materials with a strong contrast in colour and light, clear glass walls.
The original structures are highly present in the interior creating interesting layers and spaces.
The top floor of the extension protrudes through the glass wall and creates a jetty.
The jetty soars above the old, preserved bird logo of the telephone company.
The entire top floor of the extension is a recreational space of a company with separate premises in the building. The sauna area has views towards the Oulu Market Square and a vast sauna suited for 20 people.
The sauna area’s subtle and practical materials and solutions were chosen to create a roomy and cosy atmosphere.
Two types of wood pattern laminate façade panels with slightly differing pattern and colour were used through-out the extension.
Together with the lively layout of the panels, the structure gets an intriguing, extra layer.
The new business premise windows on the street level of the white-rendered 1930’s building form stylish jetties. The windows’ streamlined style fits the façade subtly yet makes a clear statement of a change in the use of the building.
