This project consisted of an approximately 15,000 square foot addition to the existing 3 story Jewish Studies Center, on the southern edge of the College of Charleston campus. The addition is in character with the existing building and in context with the surrounding neighborhood.
The site for the addition, included a 1-story nondescript, post 1955 building and surface parking. The existing 1 story building was demolished, and existing underground campus utilities were re-located.
The first floor is elevated above flood plain, and was designed to match the existing Jewish Studies Center floor height of 13.1 feet above mean sea level, which is approximately 30 inches above the sidewalk elevation. The first level consists of a dining facility, serving vegan, vegetarian, fish, and Kosher foods.
The second and third floors provide much needed classroom space for the College, and are not limited to any particular area of study. There is a large classroom, a small classroom, and a collaborative learning lab on each floor, all fully equipped with the latest technology and A/V capabilities. This project was awarded LEED Gold Certification from USGBC.
