Transformation of an old steel workshop into a family home. The site occupies a narrow street front, with only a protruding box entrance suggesting what lies beyond. One of the aims of the project was to utilise simple and ordinary materials in order to blend with the existing building and context and create a seamless whole. These include features such as copper spouts and garden taps for the kitchen, exposed 'studwork' walls and a purpose made enameled kitchen worktop, creating a utilitarian but playful aesthetic.
This is equally the case with the layout, where the design is informal and open in keeping with the existing building. The outermost buildings were demolished to create a garden courtyard, which is enclosed on two sides by the bedrooms, giving a fluid balance of inside and outside spaces.
