This project consists of small interventions in two schools in the municipality of Montebello, located about 53 Km from Medellin, Antioquia on the Andes Range at 2,300 m above sea level. At Carmelo, a 175m2 building was completely replaced due to its poor structural condition but the same relation to the playing field was maintained, allowing a capacity of 20 students. At Palmitas, a new 222m2 one story building was added which articulates an existing playing field and an old existing 178mts2 two story building, serving 63 children. In both cases, access to the construction site is difficult and limited which implied the use of resistant, low maintenance and affordable materials. The choice of simple geometries related to the local architecture was intentional: wide corridors, pitched roofs and concrete fretwork allow these small buildings to be clearly visible at a distance, to function as lookouts to the distant landscape and have a good bioclimatic performance.
