When COLE HAAN approached anderson architects to design a new concept store in Tokyo, several opportunities came into focus. The flagship store, located in Tokyo’s premier shopping district, would launch the brand’s expanding presence in Asia. In addition, this would be the first chance for a refreshed retail concept to come to life as a three dimensional shopping experience.
The project team worked closely with COLE HAAN to develop an atmosphere rooted in classic tradition, but enlivened by fresh modern strokes. Recalling retail architecture of the 1920’s, the storefront wraps the prominent corner site in a rich indigo ceramic tile and steel framed windows. In the generous entry foyer, oversized windows illuminate a geometric mosaic marble floor. A large table displays a curated collection of products and art objects, inviting visitors to explore, suggesting a relaxed residential atmosphere of luxury and intimacy.
Beyond the foyer, the paneled mens room and womens room draw the visitor further into the store through wood framed openings. Products are displayed on back-lit custom cabinetry, evoking the built-in detail of an elegant townhouse. These classics are accented by clean, newer elements: rail-hung wood and brass shelves, mirrored drawers, and a modern wall-mounted display system. Intimate seating arrangements are framed by found antiques, luxurious area rugs, and framed artwork.
Exuding warmth, elegance and relaxed luxury, COLE HAAN’s flagship store in Tokyo inspires visitors to explore the unexpected while savoring classic, time-tested design.
